K-5: Enriching Mathematics Instruction with SVMI Tasks

Come and experience tasks that provide so much more than just a "rigorous" assessment. Spending a small but intentional amount of time on a task with your students can provide actionable data, meaningful feedback for your PLC, re-engagement lessons, intervention supports, and rich classroom discussions for days to come.

We will primarily be looking at the Silicon Valley Math Initiative's tasks during this training. Rooted in the principles of the Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics (TRU) Framework (University of California, Berkeley & Michigan State) and the Mathematical Language Routines (Standford University), SVMI designs and delivers uniquely transformative experiences and resources for equitable and engaging mathematics instruction.

Optional Webinar: Discovering How the English Spelling System Works: How Does Spelling Represent Meaning in English?

How Does Spelling Represent Meaning in English?
Some linguists have called written English an almost ideal system for representing both sound and meaning. Morphemes (meaningful parts of words) are often spelled consistently even though they are not spelled phonetically. In this webinar, we will examine:
  • how words are built from morphemes in each historical layer of English (Anglo-Saxon, French/Latin, and Greek),
  • how this information can help students understand, identify, and spell words, and
  • how Spellography builds understanding and use of morphology
